Analysing Employee Surveys

Mission Statement

We enjoy taking on new challenges, and one of our favourite experiences has been participating in the Project: Hack hackathons organised by Projecting Success. These hackathons bring together up to 20 teams of analysts, project experts, and data scientists, all attempting to develop a usable solution for a sponsor’s dataset and business requirements in just two days.

In a previous event, we placed 4th with our risk rating and mapping of Transport for London assets. This time, however, we improved on our previous performance by finishing 1st in Project Hack 16, held remotely on the 4th and 5th of August.

Our challenge, titled "Healthy Mind, Healthy Lives," involved analysing years of employee surveys focused on mental health policies. The central question was: “How well do you think your employer prioritises mental health?” However, the data presented numerous challenges, including inconsistencies in the questions over time and unvalidated responses - such as free-text age entries, which led to ambiguous data.

Detailed Solution

Our solution began with Alteryx, where we uploaded and cleansed years of survey data, consolidating both questions and responses. This allowed us to quickly generate insightful and presentable dashboards for organisational stakeholders in people and leadership.

In the second phase of the project, we utilised Data Robot, a cloud-based Automated Machine Learning platform, to identify the key factors that influence employees’ perceptions of how much their employers care about mental health. Within minutes, we saw that employees who prioritise their team's physical health benefits are more likely to be perceived as caring about their mental well-being too.

We translated these insights into clear Power BI visualisations and created a self-assessment form for employers to evaluate their mental health initiatives.
